Original Sin

I remember
I remember when
almost everything I did
somehow was a sin
it was a game impossible to win
it was the smallest that I have ever been
my tongue forgot how to speak
my lungs forgot how to breathe
and my womb was locked into
a cold room
where it wilted
when what it wanted
was to bloom
Oh shame has got a way of sticking with you
I thought I ran away but I didn’t make it through
I’m still here pinning clues to the wall
wondering what it was that started it all
I draw lines from Eve to the priests
and from the priests to the judgment of the patriarchal beasts
but all the sinners are sacred
from a different point of view
the heretics are heroes
telling their truth
and the saints gamble with the demons
in a limbo close to home
I just turn on my radio
throw away my fading halo
and start dancing
oh I’m at my best in my flesh
in my movement
oh I confess that I’m possessed
and I’m so content
but I’m repeatedly pulled back into
a very dangerous fight
in the midst of the garden
of earthy delights
how can you tell what is hell
and what is paradise
when all the prophets want to profit
from giving you advice?
there’s a thousand different wrongs
and a thousand different rights
and sometimes the darkness
shines so bright
and you know the saints haven’t made up their minds
and the demons just want to have a good time
God is either cruel or blind
so what the hell am I
supposed to do now?
I’d say if God denies you apples
grab the apples and make pie
the serpent is your ally
your witness is the sky
and every woman is your sister
and we whisper
you’ll be fine
you’ll be just fine
